Edgecombe County Health Department is sponsoring "Go Red for Women" to promote National Wear Red Day, February 5th, 2010.  On this day, Edgecombe County employees and residents are encouraged to wear the color red to increase awareness about women’s heart disease, the number #1 killer of women.

Learn More About the H1N1 Virus
The H1/N1 Virus, commonly referred to as the Swine Flu, is still a pressing public health issue. There have been a few confirmed cases in Edgecombe County, but no reported deaths related to the virus. However, to continue to minimize the spread of the virus, it is imperative that we do all we can to protect ourselves and those around us.

Most health experts agree that the number one way to limit the spread of the virus and to protect yourself is to frequently and thoroughly wash your hands. Also, if you are sick and suffering from flu-like symptoms, please stay home if at all possible. The rule of thumb is to remain home until at least 24 hours after your fever has gone down.

Beginning with Senate Bill 111 in 1989 and in subsequent legislation, the North Carolina General Assembly has established disposal bans on a wide range of materials. New disposal bans came into effect on Oct. 1, 2009 on used oil filters, plastic bottles and wooden pallets. These join a list that includes:
  • Aluminum Cans
  • Antifreeze
  • Appliances
  • Lead-Acid Batteries
  • Motor Oil
  • Oyster Shells
  • Yard Waste
  • Scrap Tires
  • Beverage Containers from ABC permitted facilities
