EMS Billing Information

Medical billing is an important aspect of providing emergency medical services. When an EMS professional provides medical care to a patient, there are costs associated with the service provided. This includes the cost of equipment, fuel, medical supplies, and the prehospital professional's time and expertise.

In many cases, the costs are covered by insurance, either through the patient's own insurance or through government-funded insurance programs such as Medicare or Medicaid. However, there may be instances where a patient does not have insurance, or the insurance coverage is insufficient to cover the full cost of the services provided. In these cases, the EMS agency (or contracted billing agency) may need to bill the patient directly for the remaining balance.

Also, county based tax dollars are used to subsidize a portion of the total cost of EMS operations that are not recovered from charges billed to EMS users. Edgecombe County also uses the North Carolina Debt Setoff program where unpaid amounts can be deducted from North Carolina State income tax refunds and lottery winnings.
