Compassion. Respect. Integrity. Teamwork

Along the banks of the Tar River and U.S. 64 in Eastern North Carolina you'll find Edgecombe County. It is one of the oldest counties in the state (founded in 1741) and holds some of the richest colonial history

The largest municipalities include the eastern side of the City of Rocky Mount and the Town of Tarboro. Tarboro is the 9th oldest town in the state (1760).

We operate as county-based EMS and our first "in-service" date was on January 21st, 2021 after the private rescue and EMS  merger of the former Edgecombe County Rescue Squad.

ECEMS responds to emergency medical requests and also provides community paramedic services.

We run approximately 16,000 calls yearly. Our emergency division operates on a "24/72" schedule with built-in "continuing education" meetings quarterly to fulfill recertification requirements. This means our providers work 24-hour shifts followed by three days off to rest and to be with their families. Our peak time unit operates from 7am until 8pm from Monday to Saturday weekly. The community paramedic program operates a flex work week that usually follows normal business hours.

For more information about the benefits we offer and topics related to employment, please see "Employment" tab.

**Patient Refusal of Transport: You are not forced to go to the hospital because you called 911. It is often strongly recommended that you go to the hospital, but if you are awake, alert, and oriented, you have the right to choose whether or not you will be transported via ambulance. If you choose to refuse transport to the hospital, you will be asked to sign a Patient Refusal Form by the paramedics to document your decision to refuse medical care.**
