Heavy Equipment Operator
Description : General Definition of Work
Performs semiskilled work operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment in the solid waste management facility, performing labor and semiskilled tasks as assigned, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Solid Waste Management Director.

Operates heavy equipment including front end loader, garbage packer, back hoe. yard dog and dirt mover. Pulls trailers in and out of transfer station. Performs repairs and maintenance of machinery for full operation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Through knowledge of the principles and practices of operations and servicing heavy construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; through knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; comprehensive skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and specialized equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates and the general public.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience operations heavy equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and frequently requires standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by mean of the spoken work; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and /or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operations machines and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions ( non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and occasionally require exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Heavy Equipment Operator Certification must be obtained within (3) years of the date of hire. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.
