Environmental Health protects public health through disease and environmental hazard prevention. Environmental Health Specialists perform food, lodging and institutional sanitation inspections, on-site soil evaluations for septic systems, permitting and inspection of tattoo artists, bacteriological and chemical water sampling, swimming pool sanitation inspections and childhood lead poisoning prevention. Information on other public health and environmental concerns is available.

The mission of the Edgecombe County Environmental Health Program is “the protection of the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens through the promotion of public health. The Environmental Health Unit serves to protect the environment through the practice of modern environmental health science, the use of technology, rules, public education, and above all, dedication to the public. As an organization, it is our responsibility to provide the highest level of competency, professionalism and courtesy to individuals from all endeavors.
