General Services
General services provided by the Planning Office include verification of zoning, census tract, and flood hazard information. Additionally, planning staff is available to consult with property owners and potential developers about the land subdivision and development review process. Copies of ordinances and county maps are available for a limited fee, to assist citizens in understanding the land development process.
The Planning Office works with two citizen boards that meet regularly; the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment (BOA). The responsibilities of each board are as follows:
PLANNING BOARD – An advisory board that reviews major land subdivision plats, rezoning requests, and land development ordinance amendments. Recommendations are referred to the Board of Commissioners. Periodically the Planning Board evaluates land development policies and trends to assess the need for changes. MEETING SCHEDULE: Monthly on the 3rd Monday at 6:00 p.m. NOTE: There is a fee associated with submission of subdivision plats. The fee varies according to size of development.
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT – A quasi-judicial appeals board that grants variances from zoning ordinance development standards (pursuant to hardships) and special use permits. Appeals of BOA rulings are to the court system. MEETING SCHEDULE: As caseload demands, on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
