TAX LISTING

 Edgecombe County’s property tax listing schedule for 2017 will begin Tuesday, January 3rd, and continue through Tuesday, January 31st, which is the deadline for listing.

PROPERTY TAX LISTING INFORMATION FOR 2017

WHAT TO LIST 

  1. Manufactured Homes, Boats & Motors, Jet Skis, and Aircraft
  2. ALL UNLICENSED Automobiles, Trucks, Trailers, Campers and Motorcycles
  3. Multi-Year Licensed Trailers
  4. ALL Farm Equipment and Supplies
  5. Business Equipment and Supplies
  6. Furnishings Owned and Rented By a Landlord
  7. All Improvements or Changes to Real Estate
  8. Dogs

 Business and Farm Equipment owners will be sent a separate listing form.

 Do NOT list licensed (registered) vehicles on the listing form.

Real Property Owners with NO improvements in 2016 and have only LICENSED vehicles and none of the above items (1-8), DO NOT have to list.

All mailed abstracts should be POSTMARKED no later than January 31st to avoid a LATE PENALTY. All abstracts submitted by mail shall be deemed to be filed as of the date shown on the POSTMARK affixed by the U.S. Postal Service. If no date is shown on the POSTMARK, or if the POSTMARK is not affixed by the U.S. Postal Service, the abstract shall be deemed filed when received by the Assessor’s Office. THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST MAIL.

LISTING BY MAIL IS ENCOURAGED. All listings will be processed in the Edgecombe County Assessor’s Office, Third Floor of the Administrative Building, Room #312.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR ELDERLY OR DISABLED PERSONS:
 

Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exclusion (G.S. 105-277.1C) 

Deadline:      The deadline for application is June 1, 2017 and is a one-time application.

Reduction: If qualified, an assessment reduction of the first $45,000 of value on the property will be given.

Property Tax Relief for Elderly and Permanently Disabled Persons (G.S. 105-277.1)

Deadline:      The deadline for application is June 1, 2017 and is a one-time application.

Reduction: If qualified, an assessment reduction of $25,000 or 50% of the appraised value of the permanent resident will be given.

Homestead Circuit Breaker Deferment Program (G.S. 105-277.1B)

The tax amount that exceeds the 4% or 5% limit become deferred taxes. Deferred taxes are a lien against the property and accrues interest as if they had been payable on the original due date.  Upon a disqualifying event (sale of property or death of owner if the property does not pass to a spouse or co-owner) the last 3 years of deferred taxes and the current year become due and payable.

Deadline:     The deadline for application is June 1, 2017 and a new application must be filed every year.

N.C. General Statutes 105-308 states that any person whose duty it is to list any property who willfully fails or refuses to list same within the time prescribed by law, shall be guilty of a Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed $500.00 or imprisonment not to exceed six (6) months. The failure to list shall be prima facie evidence that the failure was willful.
