Dems prepare to recommend Sheriff replacement

(TARBORO, NC) – The Edgecombe County Democratic Party announces its plans to replace long-time serving Democratic Sheriff James L. Knight, who recently announced he would be retiring at the end of February.

Edgecombe County Democratic Party Chairman Roosevelt Higgs stated, “We are extremely grateful for Sheriff Knight’s dedication and service to our county. He has kept us safe and served with distinction for a very long time. We are now putting plans in place to name the next sheriff.”

Pursuant to North Carolina General Statute 162-5.1, the executive committee of the Edgecombe County Democratic Party has 30 days after a vacancy is created to make a recommendation to the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners. “We are now preparing to move forward, the Edgecombe County Democratic Party will convene the executive committee and intends to make a timely recommendation to the Board of Commissioners of an eligible resident who is committed to taking the department to the next level,” Higgs added.

According to Higgs, interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to Edgecombe County Democratic Party Secretary Glenda Knight. Copies will be provided to the members of the Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee for review and consideration.

“A meeting of the executive committee will be called in March. Members of the executive committee will be able to make nominations and those nominated will be provided an opportunity to address the executive committee prior to conducting a vote. It will be an open and transparent process,” Higgs stated. Interested candidates may mail their cover letter and resume to the Edgecombe County Democratic Party at PO Box 6774; Rocky Mount, North Carolina 27802.
