Services For Children
Immunization
Immunizations are offered to children to protect them from many childhood diseases. Most of these are required to enroll a child in day care, Head Start or school. These are offered on a walk-in basis Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 11:00am and 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
Orthopedic Clinic
Orthopedic Clinic provides treatment to correct disorders of the bones and muscles. This clinic is available for children up to age 21. Please call to schedule an appointment.
WIC – Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children
WIC offers education and counseling on nutrition, food supplements and breastfeeding education and support for qualified children up to age 5. Please call 252-641-7511 in Tarboro or 252-985-4100 in Rocky Mount to schedule an appointment.
Dental Health Services
Dental prevention and comprehensive services are offered for children birth – 20 years of age. Clinic hours are 7:45am – 4:45pm, Monday – Thursday. Please call 252-641-7511 to schedule an appointment.
Lead Screening
Blood tests are offered free of charge for children ages 12 months – 5 years of age with possible exposure to lead poisoning.
Sickle Cell Testing and Counseling
Sickle Cell tests are available to anyone who has never been tested. Individuals and families with a positive sickle cell screening are offered counseling by a regional genetics counselor.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Newborn Assessments
A registered nurse will provide home visits to new mothers and babies after hospital discharge that are on Medicaid and/or receiving prenatal or care coordination services from the health department.
Child Service Coordination
Child Service Coordination is offered to infants and children up to 5 years of age who have been identified with developmental and/or chronic health problems or who are at-risk for such problems. The family is assigned a social worker to ensure that the child receives appropriate health and education services, and are referred to other supportive resources. Lead Poisoning
The health department will investigate places where children with elevated lead levels in their blood live, spend a lot of time, or go to school. Health department staff will work with families and/or businesses and day cares to reduce the risk of exposure to lead poisoning hazards. For more information, please call 252-641-7511.
Child Care Health Consultation
Child Care Health Consultants work to improve the health, safety and nutrition practices in child care centers and homes through consultation, education, and shared problem solving with child care staff. This program is funded by the Down East Partnership for Children – local Smart Start agency. For more information, please call 252-641-7511.
Child Fatality Prevention Team (CFPT)
The CFPT is a state-mandated team of members who are appointed by the County Commissioners. Members represent different agencies such as the Department of Social Services, District Attorney’s Office, School System, Fire Department, Police Department, Medical Examiner’s Office, Guardian Ad Litem program, and other child advocacy organizations. In reviewing child fatalities, the team identifies potential causes of child fatalities, identifies ways to improve the delivery of services to children and families, and makes recommendations for changes that could prevent future fatalities.
